Aloha to all Butterflies near and far, where ever life finds you this summer and in this moment. Today is a beautiful, a bit windy, a bit cloudy, morning here on the northshore of Maui. I brought myself down to a private little spot in nature to do a few Butterfly exercises to wake up my mind and body and to start my day in a most beautiful way….with my CREATOR and NATURE! Sometimes, even here on Maui, we can get into ruts and find ourselves not getting as much out door time as we need or desire. Tucked away inside our homes, offices or behind the wheel driving, we miss out on the most miraculous blessings of nature. As I was doing my exercises and opening my eyes wide to the clouds and the sky above, I was so thankful not only for the time I was giving myself outside, but also for my eyesight and that I was able to see it all. Our eyes need a rest from all of our computer and cell phone work. Be good to your eyes, give them some natural sunlight and roll them all around to exercise the small muscles surrounding them.
Prayer: Thank you for this beautiful day that I may step out into nature and feel all its beauty and receive the healing benefits it has in store for me. Help me not to take nature and my eye-sight …and all my blessings for granted. I will take good care of myself so that I may better shine and be a better reflection of the One great Love… God and Creator.
Mama Butterfly Heidi….still learning what it takes to fly and be free!!!
Ok so you have heard for 8 years that The Butterfly Effect hosts an annual event in Cabarete?! It must be an amazing place if we keep going back right?! Right! We love it there! … and where is it exactly?!
Cabarete is a cute little town on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. This town has grown and become popular all because of the windsports like kitesurfing and windsurfing. The caribeean island receives consistent winds and even some waves in the summer time. The big sandy beach is perfect for learning and the outer reefs making it fun for the advanced riders too! There are fun surf shops, hotels, restaurants, shopping, and the even great spas like Andari Spa!
Cabarete is a great travel destination and we hope you will join us this year! Come alone and meet new friends, or bring your family and old friends! We are confident you will have a great time.
The event day is on July 16th, so come a week or so before and enjoy! Airport code is POP (Puerta Plata). When you arrive you take a 30 minute taxi to Cabarete. If you want to be involved as a participant, sponsor, or volunteer please don’t hesitate to email us! We would love to hear from you!

The Butterfly Effect is truly a global waterwoman movement. From its humble beginnings ten years ago, it has become something much bigger: an outlet for women from around the world to get together and encourage each other as they get fit, have fun, and give back. The Butterfly Effect is celebrating the ten year anniversary and has just kicked off 2016 with its Maui event.
This year, a large focus is put on being environmentally friendly. We waterwomen spend a lot of time out in nature, surrounded by it and immersed in it. We see and experience firsthand how special and important it is. It’s no wonder that there are so many of us who are passionate about helping this beautiful world we live in so that it can be enjoyed for generations to come. That’s why we want to highlight some sponsors who are working toward a healthier planet alongside us.
Manakai Swimwear is one sponsor with a big vision and a passion for revolutionizing the industry. Owners Kelley Chapman, a long-time Maui resident, and Anna Lieding, a born-and-raised Hana girl, understand “the importance of community and ocean conservation,” and they want to give back to organizations like The Butterfly Effect because it “reflects love and integrity and is soooooo much fun!” according to Kelley. They just launched their official Kickstarter campaign that aims to “lead the high-end swimwear industry into a more sustainable practice using top of the line recycled materials, manufacture in a ethical way and help empower women to feel good in their skin.”
Several other sponsors are inspiring us with their sustainability-minded attitudes and empowering us to live healthy and active lifestyles while treading lightly on the environment. Organic and nutrient-packed goodies from bRAW Bars, Life Foods, Maui Breadfruit Company, Sporting Club of the Pacific, and Veg Out keep us fueled, and Zenziva nourishes our skin naturally. Many of these companies strive to use locally sourced ingredients as well! Aardvark Straws, Wrappily, and Mafia Bags are taking recycling up a notch with innovative products that create minimal waste, and Aquadelics uses harmless dyes in their products. Newf Surfboard Net has six 1% for the Planet sponsorships that help protect and preserve watersheds, one beneficiary being the East Maui Watershed Partnership; and Starboard is on a mission to reduce 71,000,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions through a mangrove-planting operation in Thailand. Some sponsors, such as Pakaloha Bikinis, are even at work behind the scenes, by choosing to reuse and recycle, reduce waste through simplified packasing, and promote and use reef-friendly and environmentally friendly products. Here on Maui soil—and sand!— the Maui Nui Marine Resource Council is making its voice heard for the marine environment here on this island.
Isn’t it inspiring? The Butterfly Effect is just an example of how a few people with a big dream can become something much bigger. Just imagine the impact we could have when we come together to preserve and protect the planet that we all share and with which we have been so blessed!
Thank you also to all of the other sponsors of this event. Each one of you plays an important role in this movement, and it would not be what it is without all of your support!
This article does not reflect the endorsement, or lack thereof, of any of these sponsors by Ocean Girl Magazine.
Every phase of our lives is formed from a flow of energy into thoughts into ideas into plans in to actions that bring about our current conditions. But this cycle often runs in a haphazard way that seems to be out of our control. But it never is out of our control. We may not be able to instantly change physical conditions, but we re always free to use our thought and energy to pre-pave positive change. Through focused practice we can direct our minds more deliberately and pave pathways of healing, new adventure… expansion. If we don’t use our thought and energy deliberately, we can end up feeling victimized by unpleasant conditions. This habit of “living by default” never feels good to the soul. Yoga, at its core, is about taking responsibility for our mind flow and attitude, recognizing that it is the ROOT of all things coming. We were born to deliberately create and refine our lives. Are you currently riding the momentum of old creation and getting bored or feeling trapped? It happens to all of us. Recognizing it is the first step to the big turn around. Yoga is a practice that gives us clarity and methodology for taking the reins and deliberately pre-paving our futures. I say pre-paving because there is no instant manifestation (imagine the mess if there were!). When we carefully lay down intention and thought well before the time to act, the path of least resistance can be revealed to us step by step. Often we don’t bother feeling into our desired future because we don’t think we have the resources, or the worthiness to receive it. Here’s the catch: the resources can’t show up until you are in the attitude to see them! We must pre-pave by wondering eagerly about possibility, solution, betterment. From these tender ponderings, the mind is open to receive inspirations that become ideas, then plans, then synchronicities then rendezvous with perfect partners and eventually…your bright future.

The pre-event week got a great start yesterday, SUNDAY , with a fun invitational downwinder for the windsurfing and kiteboarding girls. We were so grateful for the great conditions…. sunshine, enough wind and not to big of a swell.

The event date is fast approaching! 10 years ago we held the first event with only a handful of friends wanting to have a fun, non-competitive event.
We did pick up trash that year, but that was the extent of our ecological efforts. As each year comes and goes, and we see our island as a reflection of the condition of the world, our eyes continue to open as to how each one of us effects the whole and how we need to be more and more responsible ecologically for our actions and decisions. We are no longer just the kids and youth anymore, and it is up to us to do all we can for the best ecological and emotional interest of our island( and the world), in order to keep its beauty and balance for generations to come. I pray that the Butterfly Effect will be a reflection of our inner dream to make our island and the world a better place to live. A home filled with ALOHA. I know we are all feeling the same and have a lot of concern. As women we want to nurture this island home with our love and gratitude. With each yearly BE event, we began to incorporate “give backs” to help people and causes that benefit the island. From trash pick-up, to planting native trees and helping with charitable foundations. Each year we strive to do and be better….more informed and informative, more ecologically friendly and more compassionate. This year I want to stress more than ever before, the importance of being as “plastic-free” as we can be. That means bringing your own drinking bottles instead of buying or providing water in the plastic bottles. (We will have water stations that your can refill them.) Plastic has practically taken over our life! Even when we pick up plastic we use plastic, so let’s be the change this year and bring paper bags for trash or those big recycled coffee bags! So…anything we can do to help reduce our use of plastic is great. Please share any good ideas on this! We are excited to be bringing paper straws to the event, thanks to Aardvark Straws…. and hopefully a lot of coconuts! If you have coco-gathering,tree-climbing friends who would be interested in donating and opening coconuts to all the participants at the event site ..that would be superdeliciousness….let us know. Thanks
As many of you know who have also grown up on Maui…the very exciting news that HC&S will be shutting down …yeah! no more cane burning and poisoning our island with black plastic and pesticide spraying!……
what is to become of all that land?! We must do whatever we can to prevent developers from turning Maui into another Oahu. The opportunity is NOW… to become involved with the MAUI COMMUNITY ORGANIC FARMLAND INITIATIVE . It is a grass-roots community effort. Please go to their website: www.MauiCommnityOrganicFarmland.org to learn more about the issues at stake and the opportunity to convert these large farmland holdings into community organic farmlands. We need to get 9,202 valid voter signatures in a short amount of time to get it on the voting ballot. It is going to take a lot of work and it is a multi-stepped process, but obtaining the signatures is the first step. I will have a table set up on the morning of the event for collecting signatures. The more support we can all give, the faster we can return the island back to its healthy, happy state. Maybe someday we will help to return the island back to the Hawaiians.
If you are interested in knowing more and would like to help gather signatures, please attend the meeting at the Temple of Peace in Haiku tonight, March 30th at 7pm.
