Aloha to all Butterflies near and far, where ever life finds you this summer and in this moment. Today is a beautiful, a bit windy, a bit cloudy, morning here on the northshore of Maui. I brought myself down to a private little spot in nature to do a few Butterfly exercises to wake up my mind and body and to start my day in a most beautiful way….with my CREATOR and NATURE! Sometimes, even here on Maui, we can get into ruts and find ourselves not getting as much out door time as we need or desire. Tucked away inside our homes, offices or behind the wheel driving, we miss out on the most miraculous blessings of nature. As I was doing my exercises and opening my eyes wide to the clouds and the sky above, I was so thankful not only for the time I was giving myself outside, but also for my eyesight and that I was able to see it all. Our eyes need a rest from all of our computer and cell phone work. Be good to your eyes, give them some natural sunlight and roll them all around to exercise the small muscles surrounding them.
Prayer: Thank you for this beautiful day that I may step out into nature and feel all its beauty and receive the healing benefits it has in store for me. Help me not to take nature and my eye-sight …and all my blessings for granted. I will take good care of myself so that I may better shine and be a better reflection of the One great Love… God and Creator.
Mama Butterfly Heidi….still learning what it takes to fly and be free!!!
We all love to enjoy a cold drink during the summer. Whether it is at an event, the pool or home, a crisp, refreshing beverage is just more convenient in a can. Usually, those convenient cans come in a six pack with recyclable, clear plastic rings. Improper disposal of these rings can result in the dumping of the plastic in our oceans. This can be problematic because it is harmful to marine life along with polluting our beautiful beaches.
Saltwater Brewery in Delray Beach, Fla. created something that could be the beginning of the massive cleanup of our oceans. The innovative brewery produced the very first edible, biodegradable six-pack rings. According to the Saltwater Brewery website, the rings are made of byproducts—100 percent compostable— left from the beer making process. The Huffington Post explained that the byproducts are only barley and wheat. Even though the process is expensive, it is completely worth it.
In the brewery’s promotional video with WeBelievers, Mark Tokulka, a marine biologist, stated that “around the world, an estimated one million seabirds and a hundred thousand marine mammals and sea turtles [are] becoming trapped in plastic or [are ingesting it] and dying.”
The safe, biodegradable rings are the first step to eliminating pollution in the oceans. Instead of accumulating in the water, they are safe for marine life to enjoy. If more companies could get onboard with the rings, imagine what impact it could make. Saltwater Brewery’s creation is one step in keeping oceans clean so we can enjoy everything we love about our oceans and beaches.
Ok so you have heard for 8 years that The Butterfly Effect hosts an annual event in Cabarete?! It must be an amazing place if we keep going back right?! Right! We love it there! … and where is it exactly?!
Cabarete is a cute little town on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. This town has grown and become popular all because of the windsports like kitesurfing and windsurfing. The caribeean island receives consistent winds and even some waves in the summer time. The big sandy beach is perfect for learning and the outer reefs making it fun for the advanced riders too! There are fun surf shops, hotels, restaurants, shopping, and the even great spas like Andari Spa!
Cabarete is a great travel destination and we hope you will join us this year! Come alone and meet new friends, or bring your family and old friends! We are confident you will have a great time.
The event day is on July 16th, so come a week or so before and enjoy! Airport code is POP (Puerta Plata). When you arrive you take a 30 minute taxi to Cabarete. If you want to be involved as a participant, sponsor, or volunteer please don’t hesitate to email us! We would love to hear from you!

The Butterfly Effect is truly a global waterwoman movement. From its humble beginnings ten years ago, it has become something much bigger: an outlet for women from around the world to get together and encourage each other as they get fit, have fun, and give back. The Butterfly Effect is celebrating the ten year anniversary and has just kicked off 2016 with its Maui event.
This year, a large focus is put on being environmentally friendly. We waterwomen spend a lot of time out in nature, surrounded by it and immersed in it. We see and experience firsthand how special and important it is. It’s no wonder that there are so many of us who are passionate about helping this beautiful world we live in so that it can be enjoyed for generations to come. That’s why we want to highlight some sponsors who are working toward a healthier planet alongside us.
Manakai Swimwear is one sponsor with a big vision and a passion for revolutionizing the industry. Owners Kelley Chapman, a long-time Maui resident, and Anna Lieding, a born-and-raised Hana girl, understand “the importance of community and ocean conservation,” and they want to give back to organizations like The Butterfly Effect because it “reflects love and integrity and is soooooo much fun!” according to Kelley. They just launched their official Kickstarter campaign that aims to “lead the high-end swimwear industry into a more sustainable practice using top of the line recycled materials, manufacture in a ethical way and help empower women to feel good in their skin.”
Several other sponsors are inspiring us with their sustainability-minded attitudes and empowering us to live healthy and active lifestyles while treading lightly on the environment. Organic and nutrient-packed goodies from bRAW Bars, Life Foods, Maui Breadfruit Company, Sporting Club of the Pacific, and Veg Out keep us fueled, and Zenziva nourishes our skin naturally. Many of these companies strive to use locally sourced ingredients as well! Aardvark Straws, Wrappily, and Mafia Bags are taking recycling up a notch with innovative products that create minimal waste, and Aquadelics uses harmless dyes in their products. Newf Surfboard Net has six 1% for the Planet sponsorships that help protect and preserve watersheds, one beneficiary being the East Maui Watershed Partnership; and Starboard is on a mission to reduce 71,000,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions through a mangrove-planting operation in Thailand. Some sponsors, such as Pakaloha Bikinis, are even at work behind the scenes, by choosing to reuse and recycle, reduce waste through simplified packasing, and promote and use reef-friendly and environmentally friendly products. Here on Maui soil—and sand!— the Maui Nui Marine Resource Council is making its voice heard for the marine environment here on this island.
Isn’t it inspiring? The Butterfly Effect is just an example of how a few people with a big dream can become something much bigger. Just imagine the impact we could have when we come together to preserve and protect the planet that we all share and with which we have been so blessed!
Thank you also to all of the other sponsors of this event. Each one of you plays an important role in this movement, and it would not be what it is without all of your support!
This article does not reflect the endorsement, or lack thereof, of any of these sponsors by Ocean Girl Magazine.
Every phase of our lives is formed from a flow of energy into thoughts into ideas into plans in to actions that bring about our current conditions. But this cycle often runs in a haphazard way that seems to be out of our control. But it never is out of our control. We may not be able to instantly change physical conditions, but we re always free to use our thought and energy to pre-pave positive change. Through focused practice we can direct our minds more deliberately and pave pathways of healing, new adventure… expansion. If we don’t use our thought and energy deliberately, we can end up feeling victimized by unpleasant conditions. This habit of “living by default” never feels good to the soul. Yoga, at its core, is about taking responsibility for our mind flow and attitude, recognizing that it is the ROOT of all things coming. We were born to deliberately create and refine our lives. Are you currently riding the momentum of old creation and getting bored or feeling trapped? It happens to all of us. Recognizing it is the first step to the big turn around. Yoga is a practice that gives us clarity and methodology for taking the reins and deliberately pre-paving our futures. I say pre-paving because there is no instant manifestation (imagine the mess if there were!). When we carefully lay down intention and thought well before the time to act, the path of least resistance can be revealed to us step by step. Often we don’t bother feeling into our desired future because we don’t think we have the resources, or the worthiness to receive it. Here’s the catch: the resources can’t show up until you are in the attitude to see them! We must pre-pave by wondering eagerly about possibility, solution, betterment. From these tender ponderings, the mind is open to receive inspirations that become ideas, then plans, then synchronicities then rendezvous with perfect partners and eventually…your bright future.
